Someone's in the Kitchen with Alex: Why Raising a Child is So Expensive

Cheese Tortellini in Saffron Cream Sauce

Matt got the saffron out, saving me from dragging out a stool the next day (I'm short, cupboards are tall), and like just about every other food, spice or seasoning he sees, Alex wanted to smell it.

After doing so, he declared we should have tortellini with some sort of saffron sauce.

I was so proud, I could have cried.

So, last night, that's exactly what we did.

With help from his dad, Alex prepared this gorgeous dish. Few ingredients, just cream, butter, saffron & grated Asiago cheese, and of course, pasta.

It was rich and filling, and delicious. Not bad for a five and a half year old, eh?

Of course, he's developing some fairly expensive tastes; Yale or Gruyere? Hope it doesn't come to that.

Blog Party's gone ghoulish: this month we're serving up Gross Anatomy!

Get full details here, and RSVP no later than next Thursday, 16 October. Hope to see you there!

- Someone's In The Kitchen With Alex: Gruyere Waffles
Under the tree, Alex found two new cookbooks. C is for Cooking and A Star Wars Cookbook. You know, because he's our kid. First thing he wanted to try, the Cheese Waffles from Sesame Street. A fairly standard waffle recipe, but with the addition...

- Cookbook Review: Sauces
I've always thought of books as friends. They've been there for me through some very rough times, they cheer me up when I'm down, they allow me to travel without packing my luggage. I've never been afraid of a book, but upon seeing...

- Someone's In The Kitchen With Alex: Tortellini With Sun-dried Tomatoes
I found this one hiding in the cute little recipe box I'd picked up at Sur La Table many years ago. Something I'd written down at least seven years ago, but never made. A pasta salad, using cheese tortellini, basil, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes,...

- Revisiting An Old Friend
It has been a very long time. At least a year. More than a year since we've made risotto? How can this be? Well, with an ounce of saffron kicking around, it was time to correct that. Risotto is one of Matt's specialties, so I'll let him...

Wow...what an easily prepared, and darn good, dinner. Cheese Tortellini with Walnut Pesto; walnuts, parsley, garlic, olive oil, S&P, and Parmesan coarsely 'pulsed', tossed with cheese tortellini, butter and a bit of cooking liquid. Simple ingredients,...
