Things to do with Cars
Saturday night, we went (back) to the drive-in theater, this time with Alex. Cars was showing, and I thought he might enjoy the movie.
We went to one of the other theaters this time, The Parkway, which didn't have as nice a play area for the kids. But there were some great, classic, Oldies playing, and after a trip to the concession stand, we were set.
The food served at the drive-in is definitely not gourmet, but it's perfect for the setting. Burgers and fries, popcorn and ice cream treats.
We'd packed the insulated picnic basket with sandwiches and drinks from home, but with a cool, retro, snack shack like that, how could we resist?
Since the temperature was around ninety, we let Alex pick out an ice cream 'novelty'; he went with the Scooby Doo push-up pop, and was pretty happy with it.
They sell a 'kid's meal', which consists of either a hamburger or hot dog, fries and a drink. Obviously, we wouldn't be getting this for Alex. But...the meal comes in a very nifty cardboard car!
Matt ordered one, just for the cruiser...which will fit very nicely in my retro kitchen.
From experience, we knew we had to leave the house just after five; if you want a good 'seat' at the drive-in, you get there early. That way, you can park where ever you want.
We got in line, about eight cars back, just after six. Which means you sit in your comfortably air conditioned car for a while, waiting for the gates to open. Normally, that would be seven, but this place (probably because there really wasn't enough room for the cars to line up without blocking the road) let us in at six-thirty.
Which was great...but the film doesn't start till dusk. And this time of year, that's after nine o'clock.
We were a little worried about Alex, wondering if he'd survive (or if we would!) till the movie started.
But despite the very hot sun, and no nap, he was great. Smart parents that we are, we'd packed lots of 'distractions' for Alex, including bubbles and books. And while all that was just fine, and lots of fun for him, what really helped pass the time, and gave him the greatest joy, was dancing to the music!

A very simple soup last night; garlicky broth, tomatoes, basil and cheese tortellini, with a chunk of focaccia. But Alex wasn't interested. He instead asked for a 'regular plate' with carrots and tomatoes. And 'something to dip',...
