Summer Syrups

I recently wrote about Torani syrups, but at the Fancy Food Show earlier this year I also discovered syrups from the Sonoma Syrup Company. Less sweet than Torani and made from all natural ingredients, Sonoma Syrups are a real treat not just for drinks but also for experimenting in the kitchen.

Sonoma syrups come in terrific flavors like tangerine, lavender, pomegranate and vanilla. They give you a bit of a head start in the kitchen for infusing your creations with flavor. One idea is to mix them with powdered sugar to make a simple glaze for homemade baked goods. You can also use them in marinades and salad dressings. I'll be playing around with these syrups and sharing more recipes, but in the meantime check out an article I wrote for SF Station on using syrups this summer. In it you'll find the recipe for Gary Danko's signature cocktail the Orange Dreamsicle.

- Soda Stream Sparkling Water
When the waiter asks what kind of water I say "tap," but my other half says "sparkling." Until recently we had been drinking plain filtered tap water at home, but not anymore, now our water sparkles there too. My dad used to buy seltzer water in cans...

- Holiday Gift Guide
Over Thanksgiving I hopped behind couches, slipped into a closet and even snuck out a backdoor. Yes, I was playing hide-and-go-seek with my not quite 5 year old niece. And every time she found me and we switched places (she'd hide, I'd seek),...

- Too Many Pomegranates?
You may have noticed that pomegranates have made their way into my blog quite a bit lately. Having discovered pomegranate concentrate or molasses I have done a little experiementing. I've also been writing a story on syrups including some recipes...

- Signs Of An Early Summer
It's not actually summer yet, and thankfully the humidity hasn't taken over here in the South. But it's been warm. Warm enough to bring out Alex's Snoopy Sno Cone machine! Several nights a week, we turn the handle and transform ordinary...

- Finally, A Product For Me
Found on Amazon, a soft drink that mimics the flavor of a Mojito, without the alcohol! As a non-drinker (by choice), I always feel I'm missing out on a lot of interesting flavor combos; things you just can't replicate with pop or flavored syrups....
