Favorite Things: Beard Papa Cream Puffs

They're here! Beard Papa opened up their first retail location in San Francisco today. For the uninitiated, Beard Papa specializes in cream puffs, but no ordinary cream puffs. These super-fresh, crunchy, creamy and not-too-sweet treats have taken Japan by storm where there are over 240 stores. Beard Papa cream puffs are much larger than typical ones and positively delicious.

A special choux pastry shell is made with what they descrbe as an "inner shell" and pie-crust "outer shell".

The puff is filled to order in front of your eyes, with a whipped cream custard mixture flecked with the seeds of vanilla beans.

The menu is scant, in additon to cream puffs there are cheese cake sticks, fondant au chocolate and eclairs plus beverages. But really, all you're going to want is a cream puff anyway. Soon they will be serving a special flavor of the week that will rotate weekly. I tried the green tea flavor in New York and recommend it. I look forward to trying the chocolate, caramel, pumpkin, milk tea and strawberry. While the special flavors range from $1.95-2.10 the regular edition is only $1.75. If you're feeding a crowd, you can purchase 6 for $10 or a dozen for only $20. Yum!

- Make Way For Éclairs!
Cupcakes are cute and affordable and remind many people of their childhood birthday parties, but they were never a favorite of mine. That’s not to say I don’t have a favorite pastry from childhood. I do. It’s the éclair.  Growing up...

- Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream
There are lots of things you simply must eat when you come to San Francisco, the latest is ice cream at Humphry Slocombe. It's located in the Mission just off of 24th street, a neighborhood more known for Mexican food, but perhaps becoming ice cream...

- Chutney Cheese Puffs: Recipe
I'm a cheater, in the kitchen anyway. While I may not be a fan of mac and cheese from a box, I positively love using gourmet specialty products. What kinds of products? Jams, mustards, chutney, tapenade, Chinese sauces, so many things! Two of my...

- The Father Of American Gastronomy
"I like a well-tailored plate of food, and I want things to look and taste like what they are. I detest cooking that masks one flavor with another, and I dislike fussy presentations that don't respect the identity of the ingredients. A tomato is...

- Winding Down
Well, we're near the end of our Real Food recipes...and none too soon! Yes, the day has come when Matt and I are really full and sick of butter, cream, cheese...bleah. Slater's recipes are wonderful; just take a tip from me and don't make...
